Safety Warning Amid Level 9 Weather Alert

Johannesburg: Citizens have been urged to remain cautious as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 9 weather warning.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (GoGTA) stated on Monday that while emergency services remain on high alert, the public must follow specific safety measures.

The measures include staying informed by monitoring local news and updates from the SAWS for the latest weather forecasts, evacuating if necessary, and seeking higher ground if residing in flood-prone areas. Citizens are also advised to secure their property by clearing debris, securing loose items, and reinforcing doors and windows. Staying connected with loved ones and neighbors, especially those who may be vulnerable, is crucial. Additionally, exercising caution and avoiding crossing low-lying bridges or flooded roads is emphasized, as these actions are among the leading causes of flood-related fatalities.

CoGTA Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa highlighted the importance of following the outlined safety measures, noting their effectiveness in saving lives and livelihoods while preventing avoidable damage to property and infrastructure. He stated that the department is implementing disaster response measures in light of the severe weather warning, which includes widespread flooding and heavy rainfall, particularly in the North West, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga provinces.

Disaster Management Centres have been active in these affected areas, with other provinces remaining on high alert. National departments, Provincial Disaster Management Centres, Municipal Disaster Management Centres, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and the South African Police Service (SAPS) continue to remain vigilant.

Emergency services are prepared for potential flash floods, mudslides, power outages, and other emergencies. The CoGTA emphasized that lives cannot be replaced, and every precaution taken and every act of preparedness must prioritize safeguarding human life. The statement further encouraged joint efforts across government, business, civil society, NGOs, and communities to reduce the risk of disasters, strengthen resilience, and ensure a safer South Africa for all.

The National Disaster Management Centre will continue to promote an integrated and coordinated approach to disaster management across national, provincial, and local government levels, as well as among statutory bodies and other stakeholders involved in disaster response.
