Sanral Urges Safe Travel During Easter Weekend

Johannesburg: As holidaymakers and motorists embark on trips to various destinations for the Easter long weekend, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has provided crucial tips to ensure safe travel.

According to South African Government News Agency, motorists are urged to act responsibly on the road to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones. Sanral has emphasized the importance of a roadworthy vehicle and a valid driver’s license. It advises checking tyres, carrying a spare wheel with a wheel spanner, and testing the vehicle’s battery beforehand. Additional vehicle checks should include shocks, lights, and wipers. Motorists should ensure their public driving permits are in order if required. Maintaining focus, avoiding distractions such as cellphones, and paying attention to blind spots are crucial. Seatbelts should be worn even on short journeys.

Pedestrians are advised to make smart choices by crossing roads at marked intersections or pedestrian crossings, avoiding jaywalking, wearing bright clothing at night, and walking on pavements. Use of earphones or texting while walking should be avoided to maintain awareness of surroundings.

For commuters, safety tips include ensuring it is safe to disembark only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop and always passing behind the vehicle to avoid obstructed views of oncoming traffic. Commuters should use marked pick-up and drop-off points and avoid distracting the driver.

Motorcyclists are advised to wear properly fitted helmets and appropriate gear, maintain focus on the road to anticipate obstacles, and increase visibility by wearing brightly colored vests. Avoiding earphones and adhering to speed limits are also emphasized to ensure safety.

The Easter and Festive Season period is critical for road traffic management authorities in South Africa, as road traffic fatalities are among the leading causes of death in the country. These fatalities have significant social and economic impacts, including the loss of family members and breadwinners, leaving behind traumatised families.
