SAPS Members Urged to Prioritise Mental Health and Wellbeing

Pretoria: National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, emphasized the importance of mental health and wellbeing for members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), stating that it remains a daily priority for the organization. The commissioner highlighted the availability of in-house employee health and wellness (EHW) support, which is accessible 24/7 and throughout the year for both officers and their families.

According to South African Government News Agency, this initiative follows a tragic hostage situation in Mamelodi where a SAPS Constable held his family hostage for over 15 hours amidst a family dispute, resulting in the death of his nephew and his own subsequent suicide. The Constable’s mother was safely released with the help of SAPS Special Task Force negotiators.

In response, Masemola detailed the comprehensive mental health support being offered to SAPS members, including round-the-clock counseling and trauma debriefing available in all provinces. The EHW program adopts an integrated approach, involving psychology professionals, social workers, chaplains, and medical administration practitioners to support SAPS employees and their families.

The SAPS also conducts proactive programs such as “Choose Life,” a suicide prevention initiative, and workshops addressing multiple stressors and vicarious trauma. Mental health topics and articles are regularly disseminated through internal communication platforms to keep members informed.

Additional support through partnerships with POLMED and GEMS ensures that SAPS employees have access to external specialists. The organization consistently promotes awareness of EHW services during station lectures, parades, and dedicated awareness days like Mental Health Month and World AIDS Day.

Masemola urged SAPS members nationwide to prioritize their health and wellbeing by undergoing regular health screenings and attending debriefing sessions. He stressed the importance of early detection and timely intervention in managing health conditions effectively, thus enhancing overall health and wellbeing. “As management, we are here to support you,” Masemola affirmed.
