SAPS Prepares for Safe 2026 Local Government Elections with Increased Security Measures

Durban:The South African Police Service (SAPS) is operationally ready to ensure the 2026 Local Government Elections are conducted safely and peacefully. With increased deployments, specialised units on standby, and additional security measures in place, SAPS aims to secure the elections starting with the Special Voting Process on Monday.

According to South African Government News Agency, National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola stated that SAPS has been preparing for several months, focusing on operational planning, resource mobilisation, and risk assessments. Masemola assured the public of SAPS's readiness while speaking in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, following the conclusion of nationwide provincial readiness assessments.

As part of its preparations, SAPS has identified 331 high-risk voting stations nationwide, with the highest concentration in KwaZulu-Natal. The focus is on ensuring adequate personnel, resources, and coordination to address any potential threats. Enhanced police visibility and targeted interventions are planned, particularly in areas identified as high-risk.

Addressing concerns of political violence, Masemola warned against intolerance and intimidation, urging political parties to resolve differences peacefully. SAPS will also work with the South African National Defence Force, Metro Police Departments, and the State Security Agency to maintain election safety.

Masemola highlighted SAPS's court application regarding marches in KwaZulu-Natal, clarifying it aims to ensure lawful demonstrations. He emphasized respect for constitutional rights but stressed the importance of maintaining public order and preventing violence.

The SAPS is collaborating with the private security industry and deploying specialised units, such as the Special Task Force and Explosives Units, to support election security operations. These efforts coincide with the SAPS's Safer Festive Season operations, underscoring their commitment to public safety.

Preparations for increased police visibility and operational capacity are underway, with close coordination with the Independent Electoral Commission to ensure a secure voting environment. Firearms and dangerous weapons will be prohibited at voting stations, with police officers on-site to safeguard the electoral process.
