Pretoria:The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced the promotion of 1,965 police officers to higher ranks, with the changes taking effect from October 1, 2026.
According to South African Government News Agency, these promotions are part of SAPS's strategy to enhance leadership within the organization, improve policing, and boost service delivery to communities. The promotions also aim to increase morale by recognizing officers who have shown dedication and capability for greater responsibilities.
This promotion wave is the first of approximately 3,000 planned for this financial year, with a second round expected by November 1, 2026, pending quality assurance processes. The officers promoted include 201 advancing from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel, 622 from Captain to Lieutenant Colonel, 899 from Warrant Officer to Captain, and 243 from Sergeant to Warrant Officer. Among the promoted, 863 are women and 1,102 are men.
Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, highlighted the importance of internal promotions as a means to motivate the police force and improve performance. Dimpane emphasized that these promotions recognize members' commitment and experience and are expected to enhance organizational performance and service quality to communities.
Newly promoted members are tasked with upholding integrity, accountability, and professionalism, using their leadership to improve service delivery and public confidence in the police, SAPS stated while congratulating the officers.
