Students from needy families in Nandi Hills Constituency, Nandi County are set to benefit from Sh. 45.3 million bursaries disbursed by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF). Speaking on Monday during the disbursement of cheques, Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Mr. Benard Kitur said a total 5,300 students in secondary schools, colleges and universities who were identified from humble backgrounds benefitted from the fund with 38 students who are orphans receiving a full scholarship. Kitur noted that education is the key in the modern society adding that the fund will keep students from needy families in their learning institutions and therefore enable them have ample time to work hard and excel just like other students. The MP noted that he engaged chiefs and sub chiefs to ensure deserving children benefited from the bursary adding that the cheques will be sent to schools direct to avoid any form of corruption that might interfere with the beneficiaries. ‘When it comes to school fees, students from needy families are the most affected. By offering these students bursaries, they are able to compete with their counterparts from able families,’ Kitur pointed out. The legislator further lauded all the banks that play great roles in supporting education by sponsoring children from needy families while pointing a finger at tea companies within the constituency for not giving back to the community in terms of supporting education. ‘I want to appreciate all the banks in this constituency who are sponsoring needy students. However, it’s so surprising that the tea companies who are generating millions are not giving back to the community,’ said the legislator while calling upon the tea estates to consider sponsoring students from poor backgrounds as a way of giving back to the community. The MP also urged schools’ administrators to work around the clock to ensure they deliver good results adding that parents and teachers are determinants of excellence in learning institutions. ‘A school’s performance is dependent on the coordination between the principal, teachers and parents. I am ready to give 100 percent support to schools that will perform extremely well,’ he said.
