South Africa Reaffirms Commitment to Achieve New Urban Agenda at World Urban Forum.

Cairo: Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has reiterated South Africa's dedication to fulfilling the objectives of the New Urban Agenda sustainably. Kubayi addressed a ministerial roundtable during the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) Summit in Cairo, Egypt, emphasizing South Africa's strategy to meet the agenda's goals. According to South African Government News Agency, the ministerial roundtable, organized by United Nations-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, focused on enhancing cooperation between national and local governments. The discussions centered on achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a focus on multilevel governance, partnerships for housing, climate action, financial systems, digital technology, and urban crisis response. The New Urban Agenda envisions a sustainable future through well-planned urbanization, which can drive development in both developing and developed nations. During the session, Kubayi affirmed South Africa's commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which aims to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements. Kubayi highlighted that South Africa is adopting a multistakeholder approach, involving the private sector and civil society to ensure inclusivity in their programs. She emphasized the importance of policy formulation and local government support in achieving these goals. The Minister noted the crucial role of the private sector in providing financial backing and partnerships to expedite implementation. Kubayi also mentioned the launch of a research agenda to support the urban agenda with evidence-based and sustainable solutions. Kubayi committed to involving all levels of government in urbanization efforts, highlighting the presence of national, provincial, and local government representatives in their delegation. She emphasized that this inclusive approach is vital for sustainable governance and leadership in executing the New Urban Agenda.
