South Africa to Wind Down Embassy Operations in Sofia, Bulgaria by 2025

Pretoria: South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has announced its decision to close the South African Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria, with operations ceasing by June 30, 2025. This move is part of a strategic realignment of South Africa's diplomatic missions worldwide, driven by prudent fiscal considerations and a need to prioritize national resource allocation. According to African Press Organization, since 2021, South Africa has been making necessary adjustments to its international presence to maintain fiscal sustainability while ensuring continued diplomatic engagement and strong bilateral partnerships. The decision to close the Sofia embassy is not intended to diminish the significance of South Africa's longstanding and cordial relations with Bulgaria but rather to uphold responsible fiscal management. DIRCO has emphasized that the government remains optimistic about the temporary nature of this closure. Minister Lamola expressed the country's earnest intention to ree stablish a dedicated diplomatic presence in Sofia once fiscal conditions improve, underscoring the shared aspirations for a strengthened partnership between South Africa and Bulgaria.
