South African Government Stresses Strict Measures Against Illegal Immigration

Pretoria:The South African government has reiterated its firm stance against illegal immigration, emphasizing that individuals must enter the country through lawful channels, while genuine asylum seekers should utilize the established refugee determination process.

According to South African Government News Agency, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni clarified during a media briefing that the government remains committed to preventing illegal immigration. Measures include the establishment of the Border Management Authority (BMA) and plans to enhance border infrastructure to improve migration management.

The government also continues to document and deport those without a lawful basis to remain. Ntshavheni highlighted the "first country of safety" principle, asserting that asylum seekers should seek refuge in the first safe country they encounter. South Africa, surrounded by countries like Zimbabwe and Botswana, expects asylum claims to adhere to this principle.

Ntshavheni stated that economic migration does not qualify for refugee status under South African law. Refugee status is reserved for individuals fleeing war and persecution.

Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration Chairperson, Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, acknowledged gaps in coordination following a Constitutional Court ruling, emphasizing the need for better cross-government communication on migration issues. Kubayi also pointed to ongoing efforts to combat corruption within the migration system, supported by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode detailed the SIU's involvement in investigating maladministration and fraud within the department. The White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection, now adopted as policy, aims to address legislative gaps.

Public consultations on the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit have concluded, and the government is proceeding with due process. Legislative reforms are underway to address inconsistencies in migration-related laws, aiming to strengthen border management and improve migration systems.
