Cape Town:Day two of the special voting process in the 2026 Local Government Elections is underway, marking the final day for eligible voters to cast their special votes. This initiative aims to accommodate those unable to attend voting stations on the official election day due to physical infirmities or other constraints.
According to South African Government News Agency, the special voting began at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 5 p.m. across various locations. The process started positively on Monday, with nearly 99% of voting stations opening on time. However, some challenges have emerged in the Western Cape, where delays in the delivery of special vote ballots were reported.
Michael Hendrickse, the Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer, acknowledged the delay despite the efforts of the IEC and the contracted printing company. Nevertheless, the Commission expressed satisfaction with the progress made on Monday, stating that the successful start lays a foundation for improved performance on subsequent voting days.
The Commission extended its gratitude to voters, candidates, and political parties for their cooperation and highlighted the commitment of election officials. It also reassured voters yet to cast their special votes that they could do so before the closure of voting stations. Additionally, it assured that voters missing their scheduled home visits could still cast their votes at their designated stations on November 4, 2026.
