Cape town: Thohoyandou police are conducting an inquest following a tragic incident where three young children perished in a fire blaze at Itsani village. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed her shock at the incident, which occurred on Friday, 29 August 2025. The children, aged between 2 and 4, succumbed to the fire, prompting an urgent response from local authorities. According to South African Police Service, officers received a report about a house on fire with children trapped inside. They quickly arrived at the scene, where firefighters were already attempting to control the blaze. After the fire was extinguished, the bodies of the children were found inside, having suffered severe burns. Initial investigations indicate that the children were playing near a one-room house, but details on how they ended up inside remain unclear. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with no definitive conclusions yet. Lieutenant General Hadebe has called for forensic and fire experts to join the investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Additionally, she has instructed police to explore the potential for charging the parents or guardians with negligence or failure to protect minors, as the investigation continues.
