Gabés: Some 16,146 tourists visited Gabés in the period running from January 1 to June 20, Tourism Commissioner Béchir Kdiri told TAP. The number of bednights trended upwards (+19.3%) compared to the same period last year. The hotel occupancy rate followed suit (+2%). Business tourism, Kdiri said, accounts for 80% of tourist activity in the region. The tourist season in Gabès, in general, and Matmata, in particular, covers the period from March to September. Guesthouses and rural hotels likewise reported higher tourist arrivals. A budget of TND 280,000 was earmarked to finance eight projects under the Visit Tunisia Programme and a further seven under Tunisia, Our Destination programme so as to boost alternative tourism in the governorate.
