Johannesburg: The National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) has joined the nation in mourning former Deputy President David Mabuza. On behalf of the collective institution of traditional and Khoi-San leadership, the House expressed its sorrow at the loss of Mabuza, who passed away following a brief illness. They extended condolences to Mrs. Mabuza, the children, and the people of Mpumalanga during this period of grief, as stated by NHTKL chairperson, Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo.
According to South African Government News Agency, Mabuza passed away on Thursday, 3 July, at the age of 64. The NHTKL worked closely with Mabuza during his tenure as chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team on Traditional Leadership. This task team was formed to address issues raised by traditional and Khoi-San leaders, focusing on the development challenges faced by traditional communities.
Throughout his public service, Mabuza consistently demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the relationship between government and traditional leadership. The NHTKL noted his efforts in promoting dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect, leaving a legacy of unity and cooperation. His role from MEC for Agriculture to Premier of Mpumalanga and later Deputy President was marked by a prioritization of engagement with traditional leaders nationwide.
The House expressed their thoughts and prayers for his family, friends, and the people of Mpumalanga, wishing peace for his soul. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Mabuza will be honoured with a State Funeral Category 2 on Saturday, 12 July 2025. This category, as per the State, Official, and Provincial Official Funeral Policy Manual of The Presidency, is designated for the Deputy President, the Acting President, and former Deputy Presidents, and includes prescribed military ceremonial honours.
As preparations continue, President Ramaphosa declared a period of National Mourning from Monday, 7 July, until the evening of Saturday, 12 July. Mabuza is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown in Mpumalanga.
