Tunis: Tunisia is commemorating on Thursday the 67th anniversary of the Republic Day and the adoption of the republican regime after years of beylical rule. On July 25, 1957, almost a year after independence, the National Constituent Council announced the abolition of the 252-year Beylical Husseinite reign and the adoption of a republican regime. On the same day, the Council appointed late Habib Bourguiba as President of the first Tunisian Republic. This year's observance coincides with preparations for the presidential election set for October 6. Candidates will begin the electoral process by submitting their applications on July 29. Filing will continue until August 6. On July 25, 2021, the country embarked on a new phase in its history following the exceptional measures taken by President Kais Saied under Article 80 of the 2014 Constitution, which provided for the suspension of Parliament and a change of government. On July 25, 2022, one year after these exceptional measures, the Independent High Aut hority for Elections organised a referendum in which the President of the Republic proposed to Tunisians a draft constitution establishing a presidential system granting broader powers to the President of the Republic.
