TVET Colleges: A Crucial Factor in Building South Africa’s Skilled Workforce

Durban: Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli has highlighted the pivotal role that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play in developing South Africa's skilled workforce. The government is actively enhancing the TVET sector to create economic opportunities.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mhlauli emphasized the importance of TVET colleges in producing a range of skilled professionals, including artisans, technicians, hospitality professionals, and entrepreneurs. Speaking at the Grand Finale of the Unilever TVET Cook Challenge in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, she pointed out that practical skills are essential for economic growth and that the government is committed to strengthening this vital sector.

Mhlauli stressed the need for qualified professionals in various fields, such as electricians, welders, plumbers, mechanics, and chefs, alongside traditional professions like lawyers and engineers. She encouraged learners in hospitality to consider entrepreneurship as a pathway, citing the culinary industry's vast opportunities in restaurants, tourism, catering, and more.

The Deputy Minister also emphasized the government's dedication to fostering an economy where young people can create jobs, supported by programs like the National Youth Development Agency grant program and the Small Enterprise Development Agency. She urged aspiring chefs to leverage government financial support to establish businesses, transforming their qualifications into economic contributions.

Reflecting on the 16 June 1976 youth uprisings, Mhlauli acknowledged the past struggles for quality education and equal opportunity. She noted that today's educational investments and youth support initiatives continue the legacy of the 1976 youth, aiming to provide future generations with the tools to realize their potential.

Finally, Mhlauli called on young South Africans to actively participate in democracy by registering to vote, stressing that their involvement is crucial for shaping education, economic policy, and employment opportunities. She encouraged them to be active citizens, ensuring their voices influence the future of the country.
