OSHAKATI: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshana Region Thursday night arrested two men aged 33 and 35 years who were found in possession of unregistered hunting rifles at Oshakati. NamPol Oshana Regional Commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria in an interview with Nampa on Friday said the two suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation. According to Sakaria, the two suspects were allegedly hitchhikers who were in transit to Etosha National Park for poaching specially protected game. 'During the search, we recovered rifles and ammunition that were found in the suspects' bags,' he said. He said they recovered two hunting rifles, 33 live rounds of ammunition of a 9mm pistol as well as 34 live rounds of ammunition for hunting rifles. The suspects were scheduled to be charged formally Friday on charges of conspiracy to hunt special protected game as well as the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Police investigations into the matter continue. Source: The Namibia News Agency
