Western Cape Premier Calls for Peaceful Protests and Respect for Law

Pretoria: Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has reiterated that protests must remain orderly, and organisers must respect the rule of law. The appeal comes ahead of planned nationwide demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday, 30 June, against illegal immigration.

According to South African Government News Agency, Premier Winde emphasized the importance of centering kindness and dignity in all actions, urging that anyone acting outside the law should be arrested and prosecuted. On Monday, the Premier attended a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) meeting alongside members of the Western Cape Government Cabinet. This meeting, held under the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), included numerous stakeholders such as representatives from municipalities, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

The Premier urged protest organisers and participants to ensure demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful. He highlighted the significance of respecting every resident's constitutional right to protest while maintaining peace and adherence to legal boundaries. Winde called on all residents to reject violence, stating that there is no justification for violence under any circumstances.

The Western Cape government has taken steps to address escalating tensions by enhancing inter-agency coordination and implementing contingency plans to prevent further social unrest. Winde affirmed the government's commitment to protecting residents' safety and well-being while upholding the rule of law.

The International Relations Directorate, within the Department of the Premier, maintains regular contact with foreign consulates. Emergency relief and assistance will continue where necessary, supporting the voluntary repatriation process. The Western Cape Government expressed appreciation for emergency relief organisations and Non-Profit Organisations (NGOs) assisting in defusing tensions and providing necessary aid.

The Premier also acknowledged the efforts of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre in coordinating a proactive response to ensure protests remain peaceful. The government has appealed to all undocumented individuals to take steps to regularise their status.
