Women’s Month: Forensic Social Worker Aids Fight Against Crime

Johannesburg: As South Africa commemorates Women's Day today, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is shining the spotlight on Captain Karin Botha, a forensic social worker who played a role in the sentencing of three human traffickers to four life terms in prison earlier this year. According to South African Government News Agency, Botha, who is attached to the Germiston Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit in Gauteng, played a role in the sentencing of the three suspects. Captain Botha was instrumental in their sentencing to four life terms and 110 years' imprisonment each on 23 April 2026, with the sentences running concurrently. The three Zimbabwean nationals were found guilty by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg on multiple counts, including trafficking in persons, fraud, and contravention of the Immigration Act. In August 2022, one of the traffickers and four child victims, aged between six and 14, were intercepted at the OR Tambo International Airpo rt en route to Ireland with fraudulent travel documentation. Two more traffickers were shortly arrested. The investigating officer referred the child victims to Captain Botha, who assisted with forensic assessments and gained their trust to obtain a detailed account of events, strengthening the evidential value of their testimony and leading to the successful prosecution. This Women's Month, the SAPS is honoring its female officers through a campaign celebrating their courage, dedication, and professionalism while advancing the SAPS Reset Agenda. Captain Botha joined the service nine years ago and has been recognized for her contributions to securing sentences in courts. In 2020, she received a Certificate of Commendation from the Minister of Police for aiding in the sentencing of a paedophile to life imprisonment and additional years for child pornography and abuse. Known as 'tannie Karin,' Botha holds degrees in Social Work and Forensic Practice. She considers her role a calling, aiming to be a voice for child victims and ensuring justice is served. Captain Botha embodies the values of the SAPS' Reset Agenda, serving South Africa with dignity, honor, and pride.
