Constitutional Court Orders Inclusion of ANC Candidate Lists for 2026 Elections

Manila:The Electoral Commission (IEC) acknowledges the Constitutional Court's ruling regarding the African National Congress (ANC) and the submission of candidate lists for the upcoming Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Court has set aside the IEC's decision to reject the ANC's party lists for several municipalities. This decision mandates that the affected lists be included in the ballot papers for the elections. The dispute arose when the ANC claimed that a technical glitch in the IEC's online submission system prevented them from submitting 181 candidates by the deadline.

The IEC emphasizes its respect for the Constitutional Court's authority and confirms its commitment to implementing the Court's order. The Commission plans to provide further details on the implementation process following necessary assessments. All political parties and stakeholders are encouraged to work together with the IEC during this time.

Despite this legal challenge, the IEC assures the public that the preparations for the 4 November elections remain on track. The printing of ballot papers is in progress, with over 66% of the 79 million ballots already completed. The IEC expects to finish production by 18 October 2026. Additionally, the distribution of non-security election materials to local municipalities is largely complete, ensuring readiness for special voting on 2 and 3 November and for the main Election Day.
