Eastern Cape Residents Advised to Delay Travel Due to Severe Weather Alert

Eastern Cape: The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 9 warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms over the eastern half of the Eastern Cape, with potential flooding anticipated in the OR Tambo District Municipality. This warning comes as the cut-off low system continues to affect the interior regions of the country.

According to South African Government News Agency, these adverse weather conditions are expected to result in widespread flooding of roads and settlements, posing significant risks to life due to fast-flowing streams and deep water. The severe weather is also likely to disrupt transport routes and travel services extensively, along with causing prolonged disturbances to essential services such as water, electricity, as well as impacting communities and schools.

SAWS has advised residents to stay informed by regularly checking weather updates through radio or social media platforms. The weather service has strongly recommended postponing travel plans until conditions improve, a
voiding crossing rivers and swollen streams, and monitoring the evolving weather situation. Residents are also urged to identify areas where valuable items can be safely stored to protect them from potential flood damage.
