KwaZulu-Natal: KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has announced the closure of the N2 highway around Kokstad and Port Shepstone owing to heavy snowfall. The road between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg, along with the R603 route from Tacoma to Reit, has been closed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of motorists.
According to South African Government News Agency, the province has been issued three Orange Level 6 warnings for disruptive snow, torrential rain, and gale-force winds affecting its southern regions. Duma emphasized the importance of avoiding travel in these areas, as trucks are already stuck, leading to significant congestion. The Road Traffic Inspectorate, along with local traffic police, is actively working to redirect motorists and manage the accumulation of snow.
The provincial government has implemented several measures to address the situation. The Road Safety and Traffic Inspectorate is coordinating potential road closures and monitoring major routes in consultation with the N3 Toll Concession. Efforts are concentrated on the N2, Kokstad and Port Shepstone, and other key routes. Motor graders are being deployed to clear snow quickly, with more than 10 stationed on critical routes to prevent snow accumulation exceeding 30 cm.
The provincial authorities are also collaborating with the South African Weather Service to base their response on accurate weather information. Duma highlighted the engagement with stakeholders to ensure a coordinated effort in maintaining road safety and avoiding any crises.
