Ekurhuleni: President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed that the investigations into the murders of six women in Ekurhuleni be prioritised by police. Over the weekend, police revealed the discovery of the bodies of four women in the same area over a period of approximately two months. Two more bodies were subsequently discovered in different areas of Ekurhuleni on Monday and Tuesday.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa stated that law enforcement agencies are working urgently to establish the facts, ensure community safety, and bring those responsible to justice. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing these cases and leaving no stone unturned in the investigation. He also highlighted the critical role of citizens in providing information that could help end these attacks on women.
One of the six victims is 38-year-old Elizabeth 'Tsontso' Moselakgomo, whose disappearance over the weekend gained widespread attention. Her body was identified by her family on Monday. President Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the families and communities affected by the killings, acknowledging the fear and uncertainty these incidents have caused, particularly among women.
The President assured the public of the government's shared concern and mourning for the lives lost. He urged the nation to stand up for the rights, safety, and dignity of women and girls. He also encouraged anyone with information on the incidents or missing persons to contact Warrant Officer Elvis Manyike.
Meanwhile, Acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, expressed deep concern and extended his condolences following the discoveries. He described the situation as deeply disturbing and stressed the urgency and determination required to address the possibility that a perpetrator or perpetrators may be targeting women in the Kempton Park area.
