Two Suspects Arrested for Attempted Smuggling of High-Value Rental Vehicles

Accra:KwaZulu-Natal Two suspects are set to appear in court following an attempt to smuggle two fraudulently obtained, high-value rental vehicles across the border into Mozambique. The vehicles were intercepted by the Border Management Authority (BMA) at the Kosi Bay Port of Entry.

According to South African Government News Agency, the operation took place on Thursday, 29 October 2026, and highlighted the crucial role of vigilance and cooperation between the BMA and vehicle rental companies in preventing illegal vehicle movements. The incident involved a white 2025 Ford Ranger driven by a 75-year-old South African male. The rental company confirmed the vehicle lacked the required cross-border authorisation and registration documents.

The BMA border guards, upon inspecting the vehicle, discovered irregularities with its documentation and verified that its tracking unit had been removed. Another Ford Ranger, also fraudulently rented, was flagged by the rental company during the operation. Cooperation with Mozambican officials led to the interception of the vehicle and its driver for further investigation.

The suspects, charged with possession of suspected stolen property, forgery, fraud, and uttering, are expected to face their first court appearance on Friday, 30 October 2026. BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato emphasized the importance of intelligence-led border management and collaboration with private-sector partners in preventing cross-border vehicle smuggling.
