Gauteng: The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, along with the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, will commemorate the 10th Annual Silent Walk and Run on Sunday, 13 September 2026, at Rietvlei Zoo Farm in Alberton. The event coincides with the country's recognition of Deaf Awareness Month.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Silent Walk and Run aims to promote understanding of the Deaf community, encourage the use of sign language, and advocate for an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities have equal opportunities and access. This year's event is themed "Shine a Blue Light on Sign Languages" and also aims to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.
Department MEC Lebogang Maile has expressed his support for the initiative, urging citizens to participate. He stated that the event not only raises awareness and advocacy for the Deaf community but also promotes healthy lifestyles through physical activity, unity, understanding, and social inclusion. The Silent Walk and Run is one of several community-driven initiatives supported by the Gauteng Department through its funding assistance program, aligning with the mandate to create inclusive spaces for all, including those living with disabilities.

As the Silent Walk and Run celebrates its tenth year, Maile acknowledged the efforts of organizers, participants, and partners who champion inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities for individuals living with disabilities. He emphasized the vision of building a Gauteng where no one is left behind and every voice, whether spoken or signed, is valued and respected.
