National Police Advisory Council Inaugurates Workshop to Drive Policing Reforms in South Africa

Pretoria:Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has announced the commencement of the National Police Advisory Council's (NPAC) inaugural workshop, a significant step towards enhancing strategic policy guidance and supporting policing reforms in South Africa.

According to South African Government News Agency, the NPAC, a recommendation from the 2012 National Development Plan, is tasked with providing strategic and policy advice to the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS). The council consists of 14 members who represent fields such as law, finance, law enforcement, academia, and business.

The workshop aimed to formally establish the council, orientate its members to their mandate, and introduce them to the Police Reset Agenda and other critical priorities. During his address, Cachalia emphasized the need for urgent reforms in policing due to high crime rates and findings from the Madlanga Commission, which have damaged public trust in the police.

Cachalia reiterated that the police service should serve the people of South Africa, fulfilling its duty to protect citizens. He highlighted the importance of the Police Reset Agenda in reshaping SAPS to meet its constitutional mandate and restore public confidence in law enforcement.

The Police Reset Agenda includes various institutional and operational interventions to enhance the SAPS's capacity, effectiveness, and professionalism. Key initiatives involve filling essential vacancies, improving supply chain management, strengthening vehicle management, and addressing infrastructure challenges through new police station construction and facility upgrades.

The council's involvement is anticipated to facilitate the translation of these reform priorities into real improvements in policing and public safety across South Africa.
