Baku:A recent study has revealed that despite government efforts to ensure that shared information is accurate and credible, these measures alone are insufficient to combat misinformation and disinformation effectively.
According to South African Government News Agency, the study investigated social media management strategies employed within a national government department in South Africa. It emphasized the difficulties faced by government communicators in the digital era, based on insights from nine communication practitioners managing the department’s social media platforms.
One significant finding is that even verified information does not guarantee that official messages will reach the public first or engage citizens effectively. Government communication adheres to strict protocols for accuracy and accountability, requiring verification and stakeholder consultation before public dissemination. However, the study identifies the need for swifter responses to misinformation without compromising accuracy.
The research underscores the difference between misinformation, which is false information shared without harmful intent, and disinformation, which is deliberately false and intended to deceive. Each requires different communication strategies.
Key strategies to counter misinformation include a mix of proactive and reactive methods, such as disseminating accurate information, public engagement, and issuing corrections when needed. The study suggests that effective communication about government policies can help fill information gaps and reduce misinformation.
Challenges in implementing communication strategies efficiently often arise from internal procedural delays and limited capacity, which can hinder timely responses. The study calls for an evaluation of current processes to ensure they meet digital communication demands.
Furthermore, while technology can enhance monitoring capabilities, professional judgement remains crucial in interpreting information and determining appropriate responses. The study emphasizes the importance of strengthening both technological capabilities and the skills of communication practitioners.
Audience trust and engagement are vital for effective communication. The study notes that government messaging must be both accurate and relatable to ensure public trust and attention.
In conclusion, the research recommends strengthening organizational capacity, improving response processes, enhancing technology, and adopting a more audience-focused approach. Effective communication requires collaboration across government institutions to ensure timely and accurate public information dissemination.
