Pretoria: Government has welcomed the breakthrough made by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) following a thorough investigation into allegations of corruption within the Department of Home Affairs.
According to South African Government News Agency, the investigation uncovered corruption linked to the fraudulent issuing of official documents to illegal immigrants. Government stated that such criminal conduct undermines the integrity of South Africa's immigration system, weakens public trust in state institutions, and compromises national security.
Government commended the SIU for its diligent work and reaffirmed its unwavering support for law enforcement agencies in holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. It highlighted that this case demonstrates the government's commitment to rooting out any form of corruption, aligning with President Ramaphosa's pledge during the State of the Nation Address to prioritize fighting corruption and strengthening state capacity.
The successful investigation is seen as a testament to the active implementation of the government's anti-corruption campaign, as stated by Acting Government Spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa. The government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to corrupt activities in both public and private sectors, recognizing that corruption deprives citizens of quality service delivery and undermines confidence in institutions meant to serve them.
In 2020, Cabinet adopted the National Anti-Corruption Strategy, emphasizing preventive measures that complement law enforcement efforts in combating corruption. Mnukwa reiterated that a capable, ethical, and developmental state relies on collective responsibility and accountability.
Government has called on the public and public servants to report corruption and support efforts to safeguard institutional integrity. It remains committed to building a professional public service that operates with integrity, transparency, and respect for the rule of law. Citizens can report fraud and corruption anonymously via the National Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701 (toll-free) or through email at [email protected].
