Inmates Achieve 94.4% Pass Rate in 2025 Matric Exams


Goodwood: The Department of Correctional Services has achieved a remarkable 94.4% pass rate for the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. This impressive accomplishment was announced by Minister Pieter Groenewald at the Goodwood Correctional Facility in the Western Cape.



According to South African Government News Agency, 180 learners from 18 correctional services schools participated in the NSC examinations in 2025. Among these, 15 schools boasted a 100% pass rate, collectively earning a total of 132 distinctions. Two schools, Usethubeni in Durban-Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, and Baviaanspoort in the Gauteng Region, have maintained an unbroken 100% pass rate for the past decade. Additionally, the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre School also achieved a perfect pass rate.



KwaZulu-Natal emerged as a standout region, producing the highest number of matriculants with 50 learners, 45 of whom attained Bachelor passes. Usethubeni alone accounted for 31 learners, all achieving Bachelor passes. Minister Groenewald highlighted that these results emphasize a focus not just on passing, but on producing high-quality outcomes.



In his address, Minister Groenewald underscored the transformative power of education. He remarked that the ceremony was not only about announcing results but also about celebrating resilience, discipline, and educational excellence. He emphasized that education remains a potent tool for rehabilitation, reintegration, and nation-building.



Groenewald praised the commitment of family members, teachers, and officials for their unwavering dedication to the learners. He acknowledged the challenging conditions under which educators work and commended them for their professionalism. The support from Heads of Correctional Centres and all officials, along with the encouragement from parents and families, was recognized as essential to the success of the learners.



The Minister also expressed gratitude to the Department of Basic Education for its ongoing collaboration with the Formal Education Directorate and correctional facilities across the country.
