KZN Premier Calls for Enhanced Collaboration to Improve Freight and Logistics

Durban:KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has urged greater collaboration between the government and the private sector to tackle bottlenecks in the region's freight and logistics network.

According to South African Government News Agency, Ntuli made these remarks during the 'UnBlocked: Focus on Freight' event at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. He highlighted the crucial role of the freight and logistics sector in the province's economy and stressed the importance of efficient infrastructure and systems to support trade.

The event gathered representatives from the government, the freight and logistics industry, ports, and businesses to discuss challenges affecting the movement of goods through KwaZulu-Natal. The discussions aimed to identify practical interventions to enhance the province's logistics network.

Key topics included congestion at the Port of Durban, freight movement, supply chain efficiency, and the necessity for stronger cooperation between the government and the private sector. Ntuli emphasized that addressing these issues is vital due to KwaZulu-Natal's strategic position in South Africa's logistics network, with the Port of Durban and major road freight corridors linking businesses, domestic markets, and international trade.

The premier underscored the broader implications of efficient freight movement for investment, economic competitiveness, job creation, and the cost of doing business in the region. The event offered freight operators and industry stakeholders an opportunity to present their challenges to government representatives directly.

The discussions centered on practical measures to reduce congestion, improve goods movement, and enhance the reliability and efficiency of logistics operations. Ntuli reiterated that overcoming the challenges in the freight sector requires sustained public-private collaboration and that such engagements are crucial for translating discussions into practical interventions that bolster KwaZulu-Natal's position as a major trade and logistics hub.
