Gauteng: Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has embraced four significant infrastructure investment opportunities, presented to both local and international Development Finance Institutions and Multilateral Development Banks. The announcement was made during the Infrastructure South Africa's Development Partners Forum Deal Pitching Session, chaired by Macpherson in Gauteng.
According to South African Government News Agency, the four projects encompass housing, aviation, bulk water, and energy infrastructure, collectively necessitating over R53 billion in debt finance. The Development Partners Forum was established to bridge infrastructure project sponsors with entities capable of providing financing, technical expertise, risk-sharing instruments, and advisory support.
The session aimed to facilitate direct interactions between financiers and project representatives, enabling them to scrutinize live projects, evaluate investment readiness, and pinpoint opportunities for financing and partnership. The support extends to private sector-led projects, aligning with the national objective to boost gross fixed capital formation to 30% of the GDP, with private sector investment expected to contribute significantly.
Minister Macpherson highlighted the importance of connecting credible infrastructure projects with institutions that can finance and support them. During the session, more than R53 billion in debt finance requirements were presented, with the projects being essential for economic growth, improving services, unlocking private investment, and job creation in South Africa.
Infrastructure South Africa is already supporting over 26 infrastructure projects with an estimated capital value of R148 billion, with 15 projects having completed their preparatory phase. Following the session, Infrastructure South Africa will facilitate follow-up engagements to support transaction structuring and explore financing participation.
Macpherson emphasized the need to mobilize development finance and private capital alongside public investment, making it easier for investors to find well-prepared projects. The ultimate measure of success will be the number of projects moving from the pipeline to financial close and onto construction sites, transforming investment into tangible developments across South Africa.
