Durban: President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday deliver the keynote address at a Public Lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Westville Campus, in Durban. This event is part of South Africa's hosting of the 46th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), scheduled to take place on 16-17 August 2026.
According to South African Government News Agency, the lecture, convened under the theme 'Translating SADC Vision 2050 into Action: Pathways Towards Solidarity, Equality and Shared Prosperity', will provide a platform for public engagement on the region's long-term development aspirations. It aims to bring together policymakers, academics, business leaders, regional experts, diplomats, traditional leaders, students, civil society, youth, women's organisations, and the public to discuss practical ways to advance regional integration and deliver benefits to Southern Africa's people.
The theme underscores the necessity of transforming SADC Vision 2050 from a long-term aspiration into actionable programmes, investments, and outcomes that benefit citizens across Member States. It also highlights the importance of industrialisation, market integration, human capital development, good governance, and active participation by various sectors, including governments, academia, business, and civil society.
SADC Vision 2050 outlines the region's aspiration to become a peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle- to high-income industrialised region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice, and freedom. The Vision aims to deepen regional integration, accelerate industrialisation, enhance infrastructure connectivity, promote social and human capital development, and consolidate peace, security, and good governance.
The Vision is anchored in the long-term goal of a regional community with a common future that ensures socioeconomic well-being, improved living standards, freedom, social justice, peace, and security for Southern Africa's people. It commits Member States to uphold the core principles of the Community, including sovereign equality, solidarity, peace, security, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
SADC's goal is to consolidate the Community towards 2050 by leveraging areas of excellence and implementing priorities that support sustainable socio-economic development, good governance, and durable peace and security, while removing barriers to deeper regional integration. Vision 2050 complements the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063.
As Chairperson of SADC, South Africa is committed to advancing regional integration, peace and security, industrialisation, infrastructure development, and inclusive socio-economic transformation. Achieving Vision 2050 requires stronger alignment between regional commitments and national implementation to ensure SADC decisions lead to improvements in people's lives.
Southern Africa faces challenges in governance, security, economic transformation, and social development despite maintaining relative peace and political stability. Industrialisation is below expectations, and intra-regional trade and productive integration need acceleration. The region also grapples with high unemployment, informality, food insecurity, climate vulnerability, and other issues.
However, the region has made gains in foreign direct investment, financial inclusion, energy generation, digital connectivity, gender equality, and environmental conservation. These achievements highlight the potential to accelerate growth, deepen integration, and promote inclusive prosperity if regional frameworks are effectively implemented.
The Public Lecture will reflect on progress towards Vision 2050, including achievements, constraints, risks, and opportunities. Discussions will focus on industrial development, market integration, infrastructure development, and social and human capital development.
The engagement will also address implementation bottlenecks, effective translation of regional decisions into national action, and measures to accelerate industrialisation, expand regional value chains, increase intra-SADC trade, and create employment opportunities. The Presidency expects the lecture to generate practical recommendations on accelerating the implementation, financing, and monitoring of Vision 2050.
