Matriculants Urged to Prioritize Safety During Celebratory Events

Cape town: With the matric exam session now complete, many learners will be attending formal matric rage events and smaller end-of-exams or ‘pens down’ parties over the next week. The MEC for the Western Cape Education Department, David Maynier, has urged matriculants to celebrate safely.

According to South African Government News Agency, this year’s National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations concluded on Thursday, 27 November 2025. Maynier acknowledged the desire of matriculants to celebrate the end of their school career but emphasized the importance of doing so responsibly. He warned that a party could have a lifelong impact if something goes wrong and urged students to prioritize their future.

The National Department of Basic Education (DBE) has also issued a reminder against unsafe or premature celebrations. The DBE highlighted the risks associated with unregulated ‘pens down’ parties, which include exposure to alcohol abuse, violence, exploitation, and significant personal harm. The department encourages learners to prioritize rest, discipline, and final revision, and to report any unsafe gatherings to trusted adults or authorities.

The Western Cape Department of Education has provided guidelines for matrics attending these events. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with safety measures and local emergency contacts, safeguard their valuables, and monitor their beverages. They are also advised to report any suspicious activities and avoid drinking and driving. Establishing a buddy system and maintaining regular contact with parents is recommended for added safety.

Parents are urged to ensure their children understand the risks associated with events or parties and to maintain ongoing communication. They should also be prepared for any emergencies that may arise during these celebrations.
