Oudtshoorn:Heritage is more than just traditional attire, music, and ceremonies, according to Nkosi Langa Mavuso, Deputy Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders. It encompasses languages, clan histories, sacred sites, and indigenous knowledge, which are integral parts of South African culture.
According to South African Government News Agency, Mavuso addressed the National Heritage Day celebrations, held at Bongolethu Sport Stadium in the Western Cape, urging for efforts to restore dignity, record oral histories, and revitalize indigenous languages. He emphasized the importance of protecting sacred places and ensuring the participation of Khoi and San communities in heritage-related decisions.
Mavuso highlighted the constitutional rights for cultural and linguistic participation, stressing the importance of these provisions in strengthening cultural identity and democratic citizenship. He also noted the potential of heritage as a source of economic opportunity, advocating for partnerships that could transform cultural wealth into local development.
Additionally, Mavuso called for the support of community museums and training for young people as heritage guides and archivists. He underscored the responsibility of the current generation to not only preserve the past but to create a heritage that future generations can be proud of.
The theme of the event, 'Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us,' was reflected in activities such as a tree-planting ceremony. Oudtshoorn Mayor Jan van der Ross highlighted the region's diverse histories and traditions, acknowledging the contributions of various communities and emphasizing diversity as a strength.
Van der Ross expressed gratitude to the Minister and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for choosing Oudtshoorn as the host for the national event, noting the positive response from the municipality and its partners.
