Cape Town:KwaZulu-Natal: Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has called for a renewed commitment to peace, political tolerance, and the protection of the democratic process as the province gears up for the 2026 Local Government Elections. This appeal was made during the Provincial Multi-Party Political Intervention Committee meeting on Tuesday.
According to South African Government News Agency, the meeting served as a forum for political parties and key institutions to collaborate on ensuring a peaceful electoral environment. The Electoral Commission has been engaging with political parties, traditional leaders, civil society, and other stakeholders in preparation for the elections on November 4, 2026.
In his address, Premier Ntuli highlighted the fundamental importance of the right to vote in South Africa's democracy, emphasizing that it has been secured through generations of sacrifice. He stressed that voting rights are tied to citizens' ability to make meaningful political choices and for parties to organize, campaign, and contest elections freely.
Ntuli noted the need for a clear distinction between legitimate political activity and criminal conduct, condemning violence and intimidation in political contexts. He urged law-enforcement agencies to address criminality without bias and called for the committee to focus on maintaining electoral integrity and strengthening democracy.
The Premier reaffirmed the provincial government's support for free and fair elections, advocating for an inclusive political dialogue. He emphasized that all parties, regardless of size, should have a place in these discussions to foster trust and prevent tensions.
