Minister of Women meets Director of Education, Gender and Equality Directorate at UK Foreign Office

Director of the Education, Gender and Equality Directorate (EdGE), at the United Kingdom (UK) Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the latter’s Special Envoy for Gender Equality, Alicia Herbert, on Monday, stressed her country’s determination to support Tunisia’s efforts to strengthen programmes to promote women’s conditions and protect them from violence.

During her meeting with the Minister of the Family, Women, Children and the Seniors, Amel Belhaj Moussa, the British official praised the achievements made in Tunisia throughout history in terms of gender equality and the successes it has achieved in terms of girls’ education and the economic empowerment of women and girls.

Tunisia is counting today, more than ever, on the contribution of women and girls to wealth creation and the consolidation of gender equality, said the Minister of Women.

She pointed out that the resurgence of violence against women is a universal scourge that reached its peak during the COVID-19 pandemic, and recalled the measures adopted to curb this phenomenon and spread the culture of non-violence in society.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the Tunisian experience and the national strategies implemented in areas related to gender equality, girls’ education and economic empowerment of women and girls, as well as the fight against gender-based violence.
