Midrand: The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the legislative body of the African Union (AU), is set to hold an Extraordinary Session of its Seventh Legislature on Tuesday at its headquarters in Midrand, Gauteng. This session aims to elect five members of its Bureau, including one President and four Vice-Presidents.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Extraordinary Session follows the conclusion of the Sixth Bureau’s mandate on 28 February 2026. Convened in line with Decisions 1288 (XLVI) and 1663 (XLVII) of the African Union Executive Council, the session is further supported by a decision made on 27 March 2026 and Rule 29 of the PAP Rules of Procedure. The election process will be overseen by H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, representing the AU Chairperson. A High-Level Group is tasked with supervising the process to ensure transparency, credibility, and adherence to AU legal and institutional frameworks. The election is scheduled for Thursday.
The newly elected Bureau will serve a three-year term, adhering to the African Union’s principle of equitable regional rotation. The structure will consist of a President from North Africa, and Vice-Presidents from East, West, Central, and Southern Africa. The PAP Bureau, comprising a President and four Vice-Presidents, represents the five regions of the African continent. It serves as the principal leadership and administrative organ of the Parliament, offering strategic direction while ensuring the effective functioning of the institution and its organs. The Bureau is tasked with the overall management and administration of the Parliament’s affairs and facilities.
