RTMC Urges Motorists to Renew 2.2 Million Vehicle Licence Discs Before Festive Season

Pretoria:The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has called on motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs in anticipation of the festive season, with over 2.2 million discs set to expire in November and December.

According to South African Government News Agency, the RTMC highlighted the importance of renewing vehicle licence discs and driving licences before their expiry dates to avoid delays and ensure compliance with road traffic legislation during a period expected to see significant increases in traffic volumes.

A total of 2,248,795 vehicle licence discs are due to expire over the next two months. Motorists are also being reminded to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that all driving and vehicle documentation is current and valid. Gauteng leads the list with 851,687 discs up for renewal, followed by the Western Cape with 374,761, and KwaZulu-Natal with 327,014.

Motorists have the option to renew their vehicle licence discs online at Online.natis.gov.za, with the convenience of having them delivered to their homes or workplaces. The RTMC's online platform, which has recorded eight million transactions since its launch in 2022, has become a preferred method for many.

The RTMC also encourages motorists to take advantage of the extended operating hours at RTMC Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) centres, which now operate seven days a week from 0700 to 2100. These extended hours offer additional opportunities for motorists to renew their driving licences before the busy festive season.

In addition to renewals, motorists are urged to inspect and service their vehicles before long-distance travel. Special attention should be given to essential safety components such as tyres, brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers. Heavy vehicle drivers are also encouraged to undergo health checks to confirm they are medically fit to drive long distances.

Emphasizing road safety, the RTMC advises drivers to rest adequately, avoid fatigue, and take regular breaks on long journeys. Transport operators are urged to ensure drivers are fit for duty and vehicles are safe before dispatch. The RTMC stresses that road safety begins with proper planning, responsible driving, and regular vehicle maintenance to reduce road crashes, injuries, and fatalities during the festive season.

Motorists are reminded to adhere to speed limits, maintain safe following distances, avoid driving under the influence, and ensure all occupants wear seat belts. The road safety agency's plea is for motorists to prioritize road safety through these measures to ensure safer roads and reduce road carnage.
