Police Ministry Engages Stakeholders to Ensure Safe Local Government Elections

Pretoria:The Police Ministry has intensified its efforts to engage with key stakeholders in preparation for the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE), scheduled for November 4, 2026. The primary goal of these engagements is to ensure that the elections occur in a safe, secure, and peaceful environment.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Ministry is receiving regular briefings from the South African Police Service (SAPS) top management, led by National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and NATJOINTS Co-Chairperson Lieutenant General Mosikili. These briefings focus on assessing the state of readiness and implementing measures for effective coordination among law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry has extended its stakeholder engagement beyond law enforcement, including a virtual meeting on October 26, 2026, with Premiers and Members of Executive Councils (MECs) responsible for community safety nationwide. This meeting aimed to strengthen intergovernmental cooperation and ensure a coordinated approach to election security across all provinces.

Further engagements included discussions with the private security industry representatives through the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA). Recognizing the role of private security companies, the Ministry aims to incorporate their efforts in maintaining safety and security during the electoral period.

These engagements will continue leading up to the elections to assess provincial preparedness, identify potential risks, and ensure appropriate operational plans are implemented to address emerging challenges. The Ministry remains committed to supporting efforts to allow eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights freely and without intimidation or disruption.
