Shikongo inaugurates Oshiko roadblock

Namibian Police Force Inspector General, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo reaffirmed the police's dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in the execution of their duties. Shikongo made the remarks during the inauguration of the revamped Oshiko roadblock in Ongwediva on Saturday, saying that their ultimate goal is not merely to enforce the law but to protect and serve the communities they are sworn to safeguard. According to Shikongo, the officers stationed at this roadblock were previously exposed to harsh weather conditions, as they were operating from a container. Shikongo indicated that the construction of this facility came at a cost of over N.dollars 12.8 million. 'These upgrades will definitely enable our officers to better identify potential risks and devise proper mechanisms and strategies to mitigate such risks, thereby ensuring safer roads for all,' he said. He added that by investing in projects of this nature, they are not only improv ing road safety but also laying the foundation for a more prosperous future for generations to come. Moreover, Shikongo said that if the police officers are not vigilant during the roadblock operation, the criminals will still pass by the roadblock, hence it is important to intensify their operation to curb crime. He revealed that two police officers lost their lives at the checkpoint in 2011 and 2017 respectively. According to Shikongo, road traffic accidents not only result in the loss of precious lives but also inflict immense economic and social costs on society. 'On a sad note, I would like to point out that two of our officers lost their lives at this checkpoint in 2011 and 2017 respectively,' he said. Shikongo then urged members of the public to assist the police in the fight against crime, and in the same vein cautioned them to refrain from aiding criminals and their proceeds of crime. Oshana Region Governor Elia Irimari said road safety is a shared responsibility, and it is only through collect ive efforts that the goal of making roads safer for everyone can be achieved.
