Suspect arrested on attempted murder charges and illegal possession of firearm

GQEBERHA –   SAPS Mount Road arrested a 35-year old suspect in the early hours of this morning, 30 October 2022 with a firearm and later positively linked him to two cases of attempted murder and reckless or negligent driving that was opened on Saturday 29 October 2022 at SAPS Mount Road.

It is alleged that on Sunday 30 October 2022 at approximately 02:00, at the corners of Albany and Govan Mbeki Roads, SAPS Mount Road Vispol members were busy with patrols when they noticed a man fall as he was about to cross the road.  The members approached the man in an attempt to help him and in so doing, they found a pistol with a magazine and five live rounds of ammunition in his possession.  The members arrested the suspect on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

It was later established that the suspect was positively linked  to the two attempted murder cases and a reckless or negligent driving case that were reported at Mount Road on Saturday 29 October 2022.

In the first attempted murder case it was alleged that the suspect was involved in an altercation with his co-workers in the early hours of Saturday 29 October 2022, at 02:00. The complainant woke up and noticed that his colleague is not home and the company vehicle is also not at the house where they were residing in Mangold Street, Newton Park.  At approximately 07:00 the suspect returned to the house and when he was questioned of his whereabouts by the complainant, the suspect then pulled out a firearm and pulled the trigger but the firearm did not discharge.  The complainant ran away. It is further alleged that the suspect fired multiple shots and drove off with the Ford Figo.

In the second attempted murder and reckless of negligent driving case it is alleged that on Saturday 29 October 2022 at approximately 07:40, in Burt Drive, Newton Park, the driver (suspect) of a Ford Figo collided with a white panel van  and a  private ambulance vehicle.  After the collision as the driver of the ambulance approached the driver of the Ford Figo to evaluate his injuries, the driver got out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots where after he ran away.  No one was injured during the shooting and the Ford Figo was confiscated.

The suspect will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court on Tuesday, 1 November 2022 on the charges mentioned above.
