Middelburg:The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit in Mpumalanga has successfully secured a provisional freezing order for assets valued at approximately R99 million. These assets are connected to a well-known taxi tycoon and other individuals allegedly involved in organized criminal activities, including extortion.
According to South African Government News Agency, the freezing order was obtained from the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg under section 26 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998 (POCA). This action is part of ongoing investigations by the police into criminal activities linked to the taxi boss and others.
The assets under the restraint order include both movable and immovable properties, currently estimated at R99 million, which are believed to represent benefits derived from criminal activities. The properties comprise exclusive golf estate residences in Centurion, several houses and estate properties in Centurion and Pretoria, and luxury vehicles such as Ferraris, a Porsche, a Lexus, along with various Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars.
The court has also mandated the defendants to surrender multiple bank accounts and investments to a court-appointed curator. The restraint order is intended to advance one of the main objectives of POCA, which is to deprive individuals of the proceeds and benefits obtained through crime.
The NPA emphasized that organized crime poses a significant threat to South Africa's economy and communities. It highlighted that activities such as extortion can undermine legitimate businesses, discourage investment, and hinder economic growth. The NPA reiterated its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal networks and ensure that crime does not pay.
