Varsity Students Mourn Their Pwani Colleagues

University of Embu students on Thursday evening held a candlelight vigil to mourn their Pwani University colleagues who died in a road accident along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Thursday March 30.

The students were travelling to Eldoret for university games when their bus collided with a matatu and landed in a ditch at Kayole Bridge claiming 18 lives.

The solemn prayers were held under the supervision of the University Chaplain, Father Joseph Kirimi, outside the main entrance along Embu-Meru Highway.

‘We are here to stand with our comrades at Pwani University following the unfortunate turn of events,’ said Daniel Wanjala who was among the team from the university that took part in the games.

Student, Noni Kariuki, called on all road users to strive to be responsible to reduce road carnage.

Father Kirimi said corruption was the biggest threat to road safety in the country as many traffic police officers willingly received bribes to allow faulty vehicles on the road.

‘You will find road unworthy vehicle passing so many roadblocks as police officers look away creating an environment that fosters accidents,’ he said.
