Weather Service Issues Severe Weather and Fire Danger Warnings Across South Africa


Pretoria: The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for disruptive rains and severe thunderstorms across the country for today. The warnings include potential flooding, severe thunderstorms, and fire danger in various provinces.



According to South African Government News Agency, the warnings for rain are as follows: An Orange level 5 warning has been issued for disruptive rain expected to cause flooding of settlements, both formal and informal, as well as roads and low-lying bridges. This warning is specifically for the northern and eastern parts of Limpopo, where damage to mud-built houses is anticipated.



Additionally, a Yellow level 4 warning has been issued for disruptive rain in the northern parts of Mpumalanga and southwestern Limpopo, excluding the extreme southeast. This warning also includes severe thunderstorms that could lead to heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds, and hail in Gauteng, extreme southwestern Limpopo, southern Mpumalanga, eastern North West, eastern Free State, and western KwaZulu-Natal.



Moreover, a Yellow level 1 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms expected to cause localized flooding in the north-central parts of the Northern Cape. These storms may bring excessive lightning, strong winds, and hail.



The weather service has also warned of possible fire dangers in parts of the Northern and Western Cape provinces. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the western parts of the Northern Cape and certain areas of the Western Cape. In addition, extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are predicted in parts of the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape and specific areas in the Western Cape, excluding the south coast and adjacent interior.
