Boyfriend Sentenced to 8 Years for Attempted Murder in Seraleng

Pretoria: The Acting District Commissioner of Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, has expressed approval of the sentencing of 32-year-old Sello Mokoele, who was convicted of attempted murder on Wednesday, 14 May 2025.

According to South African Police Service, the court heard that on Thursday, 19 September 2024, the victim was brutally attacked by her boyfriend, Sello Mokoele, in Seraleng near Boitekong. Mokoele inflicted multiple stab wounds on the victim's upper body and thighs with a knife and further assaulted her using a spade. The victim lost consciousness during the incident and regained consciousness only after being admitted to the hospital the following day.

The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Patrick Sebalane, who successfully traced and arrested Mokoele the day after the attack. Mokoele was denied bail by the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court and remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.

The Rustenburg Regional Court handed down an eight-year direct imprisonment sentence to Mokoele for attempted murder. Additionally, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm under the Firearms Control Act.

Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae commended Detective Sergeant Patrick Sebalane and the prosecution team for their thorough investigation and successful prosecution, which resulted in Mokoele's conviction and sentencing.

Brigadier Ntoagae emphasized that Gender Based Violence is a grave violation of human rights and continues to have detrimental effects on families and communities. She encouraged community members to voice opposition to abuse and to report all incidents of violence against women and children.
