Benoni:The National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola, has distributed 1,087 vehicles, valued at R518 million, to high crime stations across South Africa. This initiative is part of an effort to enhance frontline policing.
According to South African Government News Agency, the distribution of these vehicles aims to improve service delivery at police stations and bolster the operational capabilities of key units in the fight against crime. During the handover ceremony at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Academy in Benoni, Masemola highlighted the importance of investing in officers who serve communities facing high crime levels.
The allocation includes 739 vehicles for Detective Services and Forensic Services, with 200 designated for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units. Visible Policing and Operations will receive 290 vehicles to support emergency call centers and the Flying Squad. The remainder will strengthen operational support and serve as a reserve fleet at Head Office.
Provincial distribution focuses on 140 high-crime police stations, with Eastern Cape receiving 163 vehicles, Gauteng 151, Mpumalanga 147, and others distributed across remaining provinces. Masemola emphasized the critical role of vehicle availability in effective policing and called for rigorous oversight in managing these assets.
The handover coincides with the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections, with SAPS committed to ensuring a peaceful electoral environment. Additionally, the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign underscores the ongoing obligation to protect vulnerable groups.
Masemola concluded with a call for cooperation between police and communities to foster safer neighborhoods.
